Korean War

Causes
There were two main reasons why the Korean War happened. After World War II Japan had lost and couldn't keep control of Korea. This lead to Korea becoming independent. The main reason the war began was because North Korea was communist and the U.S didn't want communism to spread. Also, during the war the communist Soviets and China were helping North Korea. To stop them Truman aided South Korea by sending troops and lending money to them. This didn't help to much because eventually South Korea was invaded and Seoul was taken. With South Korea being invaded it made the U.S want to join more because they are allies with the South. The U.S didn't want to be seen as a country who doesn't back up their Friends who are in need. When the U.S joined they pushed the North Koreans back past the 38th parallel and China joined in. After fighting they settled at the 38th parallel and had stopped the spread of communism.

This picture is of the Sunday newspaper. It says hoe North Korea had invaded South and that it's the start of a new war. Also, Since North Korea is communist no one in the U.S will complain about going to war with them.
When North Korea crossed the 38th parallel they had invaded South Korea. With the South being allies to the U.S this caused them to help South Korea from being taken over. The 38th parallel is where the war began.

Setting
North Korea was a very mountainous region it provided a lot of struggle for the soldiers. The terrain was rough and the soldiers could easily get trapped while moving along the mountains. They had to have soldiers patrol the sides of the mountains to make sure they wouldn't be attacked. During the war the biggest problem was the weather. Korea wasn't the warmest country and during monsoon season it was horrible. The temperature would go below freezing and the soldiers didn't have a lot of clothing to keep warm. Many soldiers during the war had received frostbite from how cold the weather had gotten. This war involved both North and South Korea along with China and the Soviets aiding the North, but only Chinese soldiers went into battle. While the U.S was there to help out South Korea from becoming communist. There were around 38,000 deaths on the U.S side and many more from the other countries. At the Chosin Reservoir there were around 12,000 casualties that the U.S had taken.

This is the map of Korea and the invasions. In red which represents communism is the advancement of North Korea. The blue arrows is the U.N counter attacks to get North Korea out of the South.

This map shows the invasion of North Korea into the South. This left South Korea with very little land. When the U.S joined they took back South Korea and much of North. In the end it was settled back at the 38th parallel.

U.S Involvement
The U.S joined in the war to stop communism from spreading. The only thing that wasn't right was that Truman didn't declare war so technically it was a illegal war. At first they had only aided South Korea by giving them money and sending troops. Their troops would help train the Korean soldiers so they would be better in combat. Once North Korea invaded South which had killed some U.S troops and they attacked one of their allies. This didn't go well with the U.S so they entered the war to stop North Korea from completely taking over Korea. Later the U.S found out that the Soviets were aiding North Korea and they didn't like that because at the time the Cold War was going on. Also, since China was communism and it bordered Korea the U.S wanted to make sure that more bordering countries wouldn't change to communism. Which if it did happen the Domino Theory could be correct and more countries will keep falling to communism.

U.S got involved and sent troops over to Korea. Here is a U.S infantry soldier going into battle. Behind him there is a tank that is aiding in the war effort.

U.S soldiers are being dropped off by a helicopter. The land wasn't the best and very open. With it being open it made it easy to be attacked and seen.

Home Front
Many people were pulled into the war because soldiers were needed. With an increase in food to support the soldiers Farmers income had increased. During this time the Cold War was going on. American citizens were scared that there were communists in their country. People felt like there were spies everywhere and sometimes couldn't trust each other. In the U.S propaganda was used to convince people to support and help in the war. The Korean War wasn't very popular among Americans. Some were just sick of being in war because WWII hadn't ended too long ago. No one really cared about it and many just saw it as a conflict not even an actual war. Though any soldier or a family who has relations with a soldier will say that it was a war.

This poster shows the American Flag burning which is a sign of our country collapsing. There is a chance communism will come if no one tries to stop it. It also, shows American citizens being killed.

Propaganda wasn't only used in the U.S. North Korea had used it to influence their people to join in on the war to protect their lives and their families. This poster shows how the U.S is ruthless and evil not caring who they kill.

End
The Korean War ended in July 1953 right where it had started the 38th parallel. It was a limited victory which MacArthur the U.S General didn't like. He felt like they needed to Finish off North Korea. Didn't want the soldiers who did in the war to go in vain for not winning, MacArthur thought China was vulnerable and wanted to attack them to completely get rid of communism. At one point he wanted Truman to nuke China. Basically MacArthur wanted to start a whole new war. Truman didn't agree with him so he fired him. His main goal was just to contain communism not try and take it out. Thought that soldiers wouldn't go in vain because they had accomplished what they were sent there for and it was to stop the spread of communism. Also he just wanted to save South Korea not start another World War. In the end Truman kept a limited victory but left some U.S soldiers there to help out South Korea. Now there is a border at the 38th parallel which is the DMZ and it is always being watched.
Here is a chart of all the casualties that happened in the Korean War. The Army had the most deaths of all the branches. The Navy had the least amount by about 26,000 less deaths than the Army.

This is a picture of the DMZ which is at the 38th parallel. The buildings on both sides is where meetings will be held at between North and South Korea. The path that is shown is the only way in and out between North and South Korea and it is always being guarded.

Quotes
1) Many soldiers in the Korean War had a hard time dealing with the weather and fighting, but 15,000 soldiers had it the worse. They were surrounded by over 120,000 Chinese soldiers and had to fight for days till they could escape. Nik Zak who was in the Marines had barely gotten out of there. He said, "I was going up a hill and got shot in the leg. Then the next thing I know I couldn't see." Nik Zak had been shot twice when escaping from the Chinese. He had to crawl up a mountain to safety and was lucky enough to be able to tell his story to others.

2) One soldier who was trapped during the Chosin Reservoir had experienced a special treat along with his fellow soldiers. They had called in fro Tootsie Rolls which meant they needed AMMO. Well, the Air Force took it literally and dropped off a carton of Tootsie Rolls which probably had around 5,000 or more. Don Gutman was there and he said, "It was nice they came in handy because it gave us energy and we all were so exhausted." Though they were in a rough situation the candy brought delight to them because it was a great treat. Tootsie Rolls did more than gave them energy it would patch wholes in vehicles because of how could it was they would freeze.

3) Don F. Admas served in the army as a corporal and was part of the artillery team. He had never really seen much combat because he was firing from a distance with his mortars. Him and his unit were always scared that they would be attacked and set up protection. He said, "We went out and we doubled the amount of barbed wire around our camp and that was one of the first things we did if we were going to stay awhile we put barbed wire around." (Library of Congress) The only protection they had was barbed wire which at night the enemies could easily cut and sneak into camp. Luckily for him that never had happened. This shows how easy it could be for the enemies to attack at night and you won't be fully prepared for it.

4)  During the Korean War sometimes it wasn't the best idea to start shooting right away at the enemy. For Roy Aders a corporal in the Army he had started firing which brought attention to his unit. He said, "Well, I fired on that bunker like that and the first thing you know mortar shells start dropping in around me, like that you know, and the platoon leader called me on the sound power phone like that and he told me to cease fire because I was drawing enemy fire in on us, you know."(Library of Congress) Everything was fine, but firing his gun brought a lot of attention on his position. When he stopped firing the mortars quit and they were able to move on with their mission.
